Lava Mines

This is the first module that we built for our Time Wizard’s Portals submission. We had a triangular LURP that we wanted as a base for a magmafall. We used a transparent orange panel for the flowing magma and decorated the rock piece with crystals, geodes, and a dragon head. We also used red wolf mask warrior energy claws to complete the look of molten rock erupting from the sides of the falls.

Having enjoyed a recent 7D virtual reality ride, Matti wanted to include a mine cart play feature to this fiery mine. He had been building mine carts from Lego containers and filling them up with gold ingots. At first I told him that we couldn’t complete the tracks because we didn’t have any rail pieces, but we later improvised using pearl gold hoses for the mine tracks. We added some bends to the track and the final look was fantastic!

This lava mine is a source for charging energy cores that we have hidden in each portal build. In the lava mines, an orange energy core is bound to a rotating platform fashioned from a quadruple inverted slope piece. The entire operation is guarded by a cannon on a rotating turret that we built from a large wheel with cleats and flanges and Boom Boom’s spiny shell. A guard in a heat resistant EVA suit looks on from an elevated look out tower the boys made.

Fiery boulders, scorpions, spiders, dragon statues, and scattered flames are scattered throughout the surroundings. The red portal that connects the lava mine to the Wizard’s tower rest on the magmafall. Matti has been building one-winged minifigures since we’ve been playing Sephiroth’s theme song, and so we added a heroic one-winged angel flying through the portal to challenge Cinder, the mine’s caretaker.
